UnHinged

  • About the Project

Unhinged is a photographic exploration of the chaotic, funny, and often heartbreaking reality of digital dating in New York City. In order to gather first hand stories, I created my own profile on Hinge asking people to share their most interesting or worst date story. The series uses silhouetted portraiture, layered collage, and integrated text to reflect on the absurdity and emotional complexity of searching for connection in the digital age. Each image serves as a “story cover” for a stranger’s dating misadventure that invites viewers to fill in the blanks and see themselves in the experience. By removing facial identity and focusing on gesture, movement, and minimal visual cues, the work examines vulnerability, awkwardness, and longing in intimate but unfamiliar encounters. Unhinged transforms fleeting app interactions into tangible visual narratives that also celebrate the humor, the heartbreak, and the very human desire to connect, even when it goes wildly off course.
